Mystic Messages

Hope you had a great celebration of Mardi Gras this past week! We had a bonfire for getting rid of some old stuff and then had a pancake dinner to honor the tradition of the night before Lent begins. I did a little research to discover why we eat pancakes on Shrove Tuesday and it comes from old times in Europe where the celebration included eating food typically not eaten [for penance] during the Christian season of Lent. Since Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, the last night to eat the rich foods [fat, butter, eggs] was on ‘Fat Tuesday,’ or Mardi Gras in French.

Most people don’t give something up during Lent anymore, although I remember giving up chocolate or candy or a favorite TV show when I was growing up. I think it’s more important in these times to bring in something new and embrace a practice or new habit during the days leading up to the Springtime. Why not decide to do some practice for personal growth? Journal, meditate, get out in nature. Get with a buddy or coach or mentor and explore some new ideas. Figure out what your Life Purpose really is and commit to living that purpose.

We are at the very end of the Old Moon today (it is new in Pisces on “Fat Tuesday” at 5:35 pm EST). This is the last period of letting go of what is no longer serving you to make room to bring in the new with the New Moon! And it is time to celebrate! Celebrate that new thing, that new way to be.

It’s time for a New Moon and Mardi Gras – Celebrate!!! This is the time for partying and enjoying new energies, newness, the invitation to start something new in life. What will you focus on to lift your spirits into the energy of newness?

The tradition of Mardi Gras is rooted in the Christian season of Lent where penance and hairshirts were the order of the day. The last day of freedom before the penance was Tuesday, when Lent started on Ash Wednesday. Now Mardi Gras continues to be a no-holds-barred celebration of freedom, revelry and life. In New Orleans, the police come through the streets at midnight signaling the beginning of Lent and the [supposed] end to the festivities.

What can we learn from Mardi Gras? Maybe we need to start celebrating Life! This year, spend the New Moon [on Tuesday, February 21 at 5:35 pm Eastern Standard Time] inviting in a new celebration of who you are. All of your experiences to date have brought you to this place where you can stand in your greatness. Celebrate YOU!

Last Tuesday’s Full Moon was a doozy! Some are felt more strongly than others but this one hit on my Leo Sun and I could feel it. Notice how you feel and what happens around you as you become more aware of the cycle of the Moon. For example, 7 of the 7 of us in this household didn’t feel well in the hours leading up to the Full Moon. That’s a high percentage! Not sure that’s ever happened before, so isn’t it interesting that it happened at Full Moon time? Just something to think about.

I’m wondering where Winter is – it’s been very mild here in Maryland and seems hard to believe that it is February already. The beginning of February brings lots of celebratory days – Groundhog’s Day, Imbolc, the Feast of St. Brigit, The Feast of St. Blaise with its throat blessings [you can google these to learn what they are if you’re not familiar with them but they are all celebrated February 1 – 3]. This is the cross-quarter day in the calendar, the midpoint between the Winter Solstice and the Spring Equinox, where the days begin to be visibly longer for us here in the Northern Hemisphere. There is more light in the day and that helps to remind us to shine our own light more brightly in the world, as Father Sun is doing. [February 2nd is also Richard’s and my half-birthday, 6 months after our mutual August 2nd birthday. We honor it so that we can get 2 celebrations in the year.]

On Tuesday, February 7 there is a Full Moon in Leo at 4:54 pm Eastern Time [the Moon is directly opposite the Sun in Aquarius] and we are being asked to give more, to shine our lights out there in the world. Be like the bright Full Moon and shine the light of your inner Sun out for all to see.
