BOOK LIGHTS: from “Women Food and God: An Unexpected Path to Almost Everything”

“Think about a time when you were transported beyond what you normally define as yourself.  When time stopped.  When you felt the edges of ordinary life dissolve and a door open to another dimension.  Maybe it happened only once, when you were in the middle of a rain forest or gave birth to your child.  Maybe it happened when you were twenty and on drugs.  Maybe it happens whenever you are in nature or when, for no reason, you are suddenly happy.  Five minutes ago you were dragging your feet. The sun was too hot.  Your kids were screeching or your boss was yelling and you hated your life.  And suddenly you caught a glimpse of beauty and it’s as if someone opened the cage door and let you out of the iron vise of your mind.  And not one thing has changed from the moment before but everything looks and feels and is completely different.”

We all know that Joy is here, in this present moment.  Life sometimes causes us to forget, but it’s accessible.  Just remember…

MUSE-INGS: Reach Inside and Remember Joy Today!

The word ‘Joy’ brings up such wonderful thought-pictures, doesn’t it?  Think of a child and the Joy that child can find by delighting in such little things.  A small child doesn’t wake up feeling dread about the day to come.  That child is steeped in wonder as the day unfolds. Squatting down to watch some ants or a caterpillar on the sidewalk.  Blowing bubbles through a straw into a drink.  Running through a sprinkler in the summer or building a snowman in the winter. There is a certain Joy in being a carefree kid, isn’t there?

But then we lose that. We start school and worry about bullies and tests and book reports and best friends.  We’re afraid of the boogey man or the report card or the team coach. We start to live with disappointment and concern and fear and we forget how to be filled with Joy.

What happens to us? And who is there to teach us to go inside to find the Joy that puts all the outer circumstances into perspective?

I think we learn through the anxieties of adults around us that Joy is something that waits in the wings while we are living ‘life’ – standing by until there is a carefree moment again in which to experience Joy.  We’re allowed to feel that at our wedding, at the birth of a child, at a graduation.  But it’s reserved for big moments in our lives, not for everyday existence.  There is always something to do, something to get out of the way before we can relax and be Joy-full.

What if we decided to turn that all around and to seek Joy FIRST?  What if, right now, today, you decide that Joy comes first and then you’ll face everything else?  Do you think that you can do that?

If Joy is a decision, if Joy is something that you go inside to find, then why put off that search? What if, at this moment, you gave yourself permission to pause, to take a couple of deep breaths, to go inside no matter what is happening around you or what you have to face today, and you asked to connect to your inner Joy, even if only for a few minutes?  Why not try that right now?

It might be easier if you think of someone or something that brings you Joy and makes you smile, but it’s not difficult to find a moment of Joy inside.  And once you have touched it, bring that outside with you and look through the lens of Joy at what is going on, at what you must do today.

No matter what is happening, or how people are behaving around you, Joy is within you.  You ARE connected to Source, whether you are remembering that at the moment or not.  You can be busy and still have Joy inside you.  You can be happy and still have Joy inside you.  And you can be sad or upset and still have Joy inside you.

Too often we think that life must be a bowl of cherries all the time so that we can smile.  I’ve had people comment to me that we don’t understand because our lives are so great.  Yes, I have many blessings in my life but I’ve also had heartaches and problems. I just have chosen to define myself and my life by what is good about it.  I have chosen to meditate, to tap into something greater than myself so that my perspective comes from the ‘meta’ level, above the strife of everyday life. I see the patterns unfolding and I trust that the Universe has a Plan and that the Plan is unfolding as it must. And I remind myself that Joy comes from within.

You can reach that Joy no matter what your life looks like at the moment.  You are a timeless, spiritual being having a physical lifetime on Planet Earth so that you can learn lessons.  Some of those lessons are not as much fun to learn as others.  These lessons are a part of living a human life. But there is always Joy within you. There is always the spirit of the Inner You who remembers the connection to Source and to the Joy within.

Reach inside and remember Joy today!

THIS WEEK’S MYSTIC MESSAGE from The Divine Feminine: Reach for the Joy!

Dear Ones,

Be joyful today!  Fill your heart and your life with Joy!

Are you concerned that you are not feeling very joyous today?  Are you thinking about your problems or all the issues with which you are wrestling?  Is your ‘to-do’ list taking over your day?

We would tell you that Joy is not something that happens to you.  Joy is not what you feel when everything in your life is going smoothly or going your way.  Completing your ‘to-do’ list does not bring Joy into your life.  YOU bring Joy into your life!

Think about that last sentence.  Joy is not an accident, so you must bring Joy into your own life.  Please do not equate Joy with Happiness for they are not the same.  Happy, sad – these are reactions to what is happening to you or to the circumstances in which you find yourself.  Joy is a sense within yourself that you are connected to the Source of all Love in the Universe, that your Life Plan is unfolding as it should, and that you are connected with your Life Purpose and are living in consonance with this.  Joy resides within you and is always available to you although, at times, you might forget its existence.

Seek Joy because you wish to express it in your outer life.  Find the Joy that is available to you.  And to do this you must first learn to go inside yourself.

Many people fear reaching into their innermost regions because they are afraid of what they will find there.  It is easy to create such a busy life that there is no time to go inside.  It is easy to focus on other people or work or tasks to accomplish before taking the time to do what is called ‘inner work.’  But we would tell you to ask yourself if all the ‘busyness’ is a distraction from your real work.  Ask yourself if you are using other people or work or tasks on your ‘to-do’ list to avoid going inside yourself to do the work required for your own growth.  If you are honest with yourself and you realize that you have been avoiding ‘inner work’ then now is the time to commit to yourself that you will make the time to do it.

For the reward is Joy.  Are you afraid to experience the pain of processing emotionally distressing events from your past?  Are you worried that doing ‘inner work’ will open a floodgate of emotion that you are ill-prepared to handle?  You do not need to do this work alone.  There are others who can assist you on the inner journey to Joy.  And not all processes/techniques require that you feel again the emotions that are within.  Use those emotions as signals that there is something for you to learn and learn the lesson.  The necessity for the emotion then goes away.

Try meditation as a way to go inside to find Joy for your life.  Some are afraid that meditation is a difficult thing to learn or that they are not doing it correctly.  Meditation can be simply stilling an analytical mind long enough to allow a connection to one’s inner being without the distraction of active thinking.  A set of slow breaths can be a meditation.  This does not need to be a formal practice nor does it need to take a long time.  But the benefits of a break in your day to connect with the Inner You can be great.

When you are forgetting that there is Joy deep within you, it might seem more difficult for you to work to access that Joy, but the important thing to remember is that you do not need to seek Joy from an external source.  Joy does not come through substances, people, circumstances, money or success.  Joy does not come and go with the vagaries of daily activity.  Joy is a solid constant within you and all you need to do is to remember that it lives within and that you can always have access to Joy.  Reach inside to find the Joy that lives there.  No matter what is happening in your day, pause and reach for Joy.  Remember that you are always connected to the Source of Love in the Universe.  Remember the connection, reach inside and find the Joy.

May your day be filled with the Joy that awaits you!

And so it is.

THIS WEEK’S MYSTIC MESSAGE: What’s on your to-do list?

Dear Ones,

How many items are on your to-do list at this time?  Do you have the items prioritized?  And what do you consider the most important item on the list – something for your work, your family, your finances?  Or your spiritual development?

Let us suggest that you consider your spiritual development as foundational to all your other values and priorities.  When you think about your work, do you think about it as something separate from who you are as a spiritual person?  It is not separate.  You are first and foremost a spiritual being having a physical lifetime on Planet Earth and your work FOLLOWS from this – it is not the other way around.  Furthermore, your spiritual work IS your work, so you really cannot separate the two.

Many of you reading this will think that we are talking about religion here but that is not so.  It matters not which religion, if any, that you choose to practice.  Your being a spiritual person is more about the eternal, timeless you than about what you do [religion].  Think of the essence of yourself as being the spiritual you.  You are timeless, eternal.  You are greater than any of the circumstances in your life at the present time.  You are greater than the people who surround you, who like you, love you, don’t like you, help you, hurt you, ignore you.  You are also greater than the job that you perform in the world.  Your work in the world is to further your personal growth, to expand the consciousness of the spiritual being that you are in your essence.

All of your other priorities flow from this work of personal growth.  The more you work on yourself, the more you are able to help others to do so.  A person who does not do this personal work cannot offer support to others who are doing so.  Have you ever met someone who is so self-absorbed that they cannot hear you and what you are saying to them because they are focused only on how they feel, what they want or what they think/believe?  These people are not living a Conscious Life.  They are not on a path of personal spiritual growth, and they cannot help you on your path.  If you are connected to someone like this ask yourself if this person is assisting you in growing or if your association is hindering you in your own growth.  Your growth in consciousness needs to be your top priority.

Can you see whatever your work in the world might be at this time as an expression of your own personal spiritual growth?  It does not matter if you are working in an office with a lot of other people or working alone at home.  Perhaps your job is one that you hope one day to leave but, for some reason, you are still in that job.  Consider that you might be there because the circumstances or the people are offering you a laboratory, a classroom, in which you can learn lessons vital to your personal growth.  You might also be the vehicle through which others are learning their own lessons.

If you love your work, are you helping others because of your own spiritual growth?  Are others helping you to progress?  If your work is fulfilling, is it because it causes you to feel expanded, to feel your own growth through that work?  And if it is not fulfilling, what aspect is missing?  Could it be that you feel stagnant, that you cannot grow in this situation?

When you look at your family, are they supportive of your personal growth, the expansion of your consciousness or do you feel restricted by them?  Are you eager to share what you are learning through the lessons in your life or do you fear being rebuffed and thus stay closed-mouth or shut down?

Ask yourself how you feel about focusing your attention on your own spiritual growth.  Are you comfortable making this your number one priority?  Can you see how your work, your family, even your finances, are the result of your work on yourself and are not to be separated into compartments that do not connect with each other?

Now get your priorities arranged so that you can do that number one item on the list.  Focus on your personal growth first and you will be able to prioritize all the other items on the list easily.  Expand your own awareness and you will bring more resources to solving the problems inherent in all the other items on your to-do list.

Remember that you came into this lifetime to learn lessons.  When you focus on learning your own lessons, you increase the resources you have to share with others who are also learning lessons.  Fulfill your goals to expand yourself and all your other goals will be accomplished.  Make sure you do not put your own personal growth work at the bottom of the priority list – just get it done!

And so it is.

BOOK LIGHTS: from “The Seven Whispers: Listening to the Voice of Spirit”

“In the coming years, I believe that we in the West will be challenged as never before to look at the question of what we really need and what we have the obligation to offer in order to re-establish balance in the global human family.  We cannot escape the system the world is living in at this time.  We cannot get pure, or self-righteous, or use our spirituality to remove ourselves from the mess we are in.  We can only consider our actions within the circle of reciprocity.”

by Christina Baldwin

‘The circle of reciprocity’ – what a nice way to describe Karma!  Our actions, and those of others, are always occurring within this circle.  Judging or having compassion – for ourselves and for others – those are the choices.  Let us commit to live a Conscious Life by planning to choose compassion!

MUSE-INGS: Compassion and Karma

“I don’t judge people!  Of course, I accept everyone just as they are!”

I know I used to believe that until I really sat myself down and examined the ways in which I really DID do the judging.  A lot of people who think of themselves as ‘spiritual’ find it very easy to decide that they know enough to judge others.  Maybe ‘judge’ seems like too harsh a word, but they do seem to strike the gavel and pronounce others to be good or bad, right or wrong.

I’ve written before about my mantra – Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have at any given moment.  I truly believe that now.  But the hardest person to apply that to – is me.  It was easier to adopt this concept when I was focused on everyone else.  I worked with the idea for years to make sure I was applying it in all cases.  I pondered those times when I really struggled with a particular situation or person to apply this, but it is true for everybody if you look at the grander scheme of things.

In life, there is always a big picture but we are so often focused on the microcosm of our own vision that we forget to step up above the situation and look from the eagle’s perspective.  What else can the eagle see from on high that we, with our limited scope, are missing?  This made it easier to see even those people who were doing heinous acts as the carriers of lessons for others.  And I had to separate the person from the acts.  It doesn’t mean that we ever approve of or even accept one individual hurting another.  But the person who chooses to hurt another is usually making that choice because they see no other choice before them.  We can be unhappy about that choice and do everything in our power to help someone who has been hurt, but are we right to judge other people?  Or is the extent of our purview to examine only the acts, the behaviors, and not the person?

I think this is where we get stuck because it feels so difficult to separate the two.  But if we look at the person as a baby, somehow we can understand that little babies are not born to commit heinous acts against another human being.  Every single infant is lovable because they are breathing the same air that we breathe.  They are embracing life on Planet Earth.  But a lot of things happen to that baby along the way and sometimes their thinking gets twisted.  Somewhere along the way they believe something or are taught something or they respond to some stimulus that sets them on a path that takes them where they might not want to go.  And then they get stuck and see no other way to go.

This is where the concept of compassion steps in.  It is easy to have compassion for a friend who is going through a serious illness or a breakup or a loss.  But how can we have compassion for someone who has chosen to do something we think is wrong?  That is where compassion is most needed, not to coddle someone or to excuse their act, but to look beyond the little scene in front of us and to take the eagle’s view of the situation.  When you begin to understand the Laws of Karma you can see that a person brings a judgment onto himself or herself when they make the decision to act a certain way.  Karma will take care of the consequences.  Karma is merely cause-effect in action.  When I hear people worrying because someone is getting away with something, I think about how no one can escape the Laws of Karma even if it appears that they have.  We might not see the consequence but we can be assured that there are consequences.

And so can we be compassionate about ourselves, too, when we slip up?  Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have at any given moment, even me.  When I learn to look around at my choices as stepping stones along the path of lessons we call ‘Life’ then I can be compassionate with myself as I hope others will be with me.  And I can look upon others with compassion, too!

THIS WEEK’S MYSTIC MESSAGE from The Divine Feminine: Send the Judge on vacation and choose Compassion!

Dear Ones,

When you think of other people, are you ‘thinking’ with your mind or are you reaching out to them with your heart?  When you have a ‘thought’ of another person you are actually reaching out, energetically, to them across the distance between you, whether that is across the room or across the ocean.  You might even be thinking of someone who has crossed over to The Other Side and you can connect with them through the veil.

Knowing that your thoughts are creating energy connections, why would you ever think ill of someone else?  How many people seem to believe that their job on Planet Earth is to be the judge of other people!  We want you to think about that – is it REALLY your job to judge others?  When you have looked for guidance about your Life Purpose, is the answer ever really ‘to be the judge of everyone else’?

What if your true job were to love everyone else?  We’re not saying here that you must LIKE every person that you meet or hear about.  But what if you were to hold them in the energy of Love so that they might have the best chance to make the most of their own life, free of judgment from you?  This is a spiritual practice that is worth cultivating.

Many will tell you that you must learn to separate the person from the act or behavior, and this is true, for good people sometimes make choices that you might wish they had not.  But instead of judging a person for that choice, what if you were to hold them in the idea of love, that perhaps they have learned from that choice and would not make the same one in the future?  Could you find a more compassionate space in your heart-mind then?

People around you are judging all the time.  They often think that it is their job to judge YOU.  What do you want them to use for criteria?  Is there any part of you that likes the idea of their judging you from their [limited!] perspective?  No one person knows everything that is going on in another person’s life, no matter how close they are with each other.  No one knows all the thoughts that go through another person’s head before he or she acts or chooses a particular behavior.  No one else knows what you were thinking when you made a decision.  Why do you suppose that you can understand enough about another person to make a judgment about them?

Try giving yourself a vacation from being The Judge.  See what happens when you catch yourself about to say something judgmental about another person.  Reach for the compassionate thing to say instead and see how you feel.

Expressing compassion for another is not only the wise choice to make, it also brings a benefit to you.  The energy of judgment is narrow and constricting.  The energy of compassion is expansive.  What kind of energy do you want to have at work in your body and spirit when you have a choice?  Choose compassion.

And remember that what you put out into the world is the energy of what you attract to yourself.  If you reach out with compassion to others you will receive that expansive energy of compassion back into your own energy field.

Ahhhhh, doesn’t that feel better?

And so it is.

BOOK LIGHTS: from “My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey”

“My right mind celebrates its freedom in the universe and is not bogged down by my past or fearful of what the future may or may not bring.  It honors my life and the health of all my cells.  And it doesn’t just care about my body; it cares about the fitness of your body, our mental health as a society, and our relationship with Mother Earth.”

by Jill Bolte Taylor

Do you know Jill Bolte Taylor’s story?  She studies the brain and she suffered a stroke that allowed her to do her studying and observing from the inside out.  What she learned about how the right hemisphere operates changed her life.  It is very easy to get stuck in our left brains, the parts that use logic and rely on what we are taught, but within our right brain lie the connections to The Greater, to Joy, and to each other.  When we use our intuition, we get better information to guide ‘our relationship with Mother Earth’!  [I highly recommend watching Ms. Taylor’s video from Ted TV on YouTube if you haven’t seen it.  And this book is inspiring!]

MUSE-INGS: Going ‘Home’!

I know the feeling of being ‘home’ when I step onto the Big Island of Hawaii.  Every time, and I’ve been there often, it creates such a feeling of peace just to touch the Earth there.  I’ve had some amazing spiritual experiences in the Hawaiian Islands and have loved being there, even the week that was rainy from start to finish. I probably learned the most spiritual lessons that week! And every visit since then has held even greater learnings for me.

But lately I’ve been feeling drawn to the West Coast of America, and that’s a bit of a surprise to me.  Having spent most of my life in the DC area, I never thought I’d consider living near LA but that’s on the radar screen.  So why is this coming up at this time in my life?  Am I supposed to move there immediately?  What about this house in Colorado where we live now?

Have you ever felt drawn to move or to travel or to be somewhere other than where you are in a given moment?  I think Mother Earth is calling each of us to be in the spot where she can support us more fully as we go through the coming changes.  It might be near to where we currently live or it might be thousands of miles away.  We might even need to split our time between 2 homes to tap into different Earth energy depending on the time of year and our activities.  I once felt an overwhelming urge to visit Hawaii and a week later we were on a plane!  That was the trip where we met a Kahuna and had some wonderful experiences.

Where are you feeling that you should visit?  Or do you feel that you are nearing the time to make a move?  Is some external event or person causing you to change where you live?  This is all wonderful, even if the circumstances don’t FEEL wonderful at the moment!  You are receiving guidance from the Universe about your next move.  You are being led to the next home, the place where Mother Earth can cradle you in her arms and nurture you with her loving energy.  Whether the cause of the move is economic, emotional or expedient doesn’t matter.  Trust that you are being helped to the place where you need to be for the time being.

There are no accidents.  Whatever is happening to indicate that you need to be somewhere on Mother Earth other than exactly where you are now is a sign that you are on the spiritual path of personal growth.  And if you feel perfectly content in the exact spot where you now are, then you can relax and enjoy the connection and the nurturing/nourishing energy that comes from the Mother.  Where are you planning  to visit on your next trip?   Do you have a feeling that maybe you should go somewhere soon?  Maybe the time isn’t right yet but you feel that the time is coming.  In that case, you might want to get a picture of the place to which you feel drawn and post it on your vision board, or above your desk, so that you can send a message to Mother Earth letting her know that you hear her call and that you agree to follow that call when the time is right.

Get ready to pack your bags!  Whether moving your home or visiting somewhere else, Mother Earth will support you wherever you go!
