MUSE-INGS: What is your unconscious mind deciding for you?

It seems as if we’re always being told to examine our thoughts, our beliefs.  That’s not as easy as it sounds.

I’ve worked with people who are literally shocked to discover some of the things that they believe.  Our unconscious minds are powerful helpers in our journey of personal growth, but with that power comes an ability to derail our best efforts, the decisions we make consciously but without the agreement of our unconscious minds.

Does this sound difficult to believe?  Let’s look at how powerful that unconscious mind can be.

You can breathe without thinking about it, right?  You don’t go around telling your heart to ‘Beat Now, and Now, and Now,’ do you?  Somewhere in your system is a controller taking care of all those systems so you don’t have to make a conscious decision to get your heart to beat or your lungs to expand.  So why shouldn’t that ‘controller’ be making other decisions for you?  Like how you will respond to a stimulus that is similar to what you experienced when you were 5 or 7 years old?  What about that knee-jerk reaction you had?  Did you consciously choose that or did it come from somewhere else?

Prejudice comes from training in our youth.  In the show, ‘South Pacific,’ they say that you must be carefully taught to hate.  But once those seeds of hatred are planted, you might not even know that you believe that someone ‘should be hated.’  Or what about those family stories that plant a seed about who you are supposed to be?  ‘Our family always does…….’ [fill in the blank].  There can be some powerful beliefs ingrained in us as children that we don’t even recognize are at work.

And so, as adults, we go along thinking that we are in charge when the truth is that our unconscious minds are holding onto beliefs and thoughts about ourselves and the world that might not be valid anymore.  The bogeyman under the bed might not actually be there but the little child within might still be afraid of a strange situation.

How do we use this information in our adult lives?  The first place to start is to examine what we believe.  In every situation, the question to ask is, ‘Is what I believe about this situation true?’  When we are responding to a particular stimulus, we can ask ourselves if the response is appropriate in this moment or is our unconscious mind adding on some data from previous experiences that might not apply right now.  This ability to ask questions of ourselves is the first step to living a conscious life.

And we must question what comes at us and to us from outside sources.  If you are told something that doesn’t feel right, pause and ask yourself what it is exactly that you are feeling.  What, within yourself, is not resonating with this information?  Or what IS resonating with this information, and can you believe something new or contrary to what you believed before?

These questions only help us if we have already started to examine ourselves.  Being on a path of personal growth invites us to become aware in every moment of our own thoughts and beliefs.  For some, this might require help at first, especially in clearing away blocks held in the unconscious mind and difficult to unearth for examination.  The good news is that the more you practice examining your thoughts and beliefs the easier it is to continue.  It rapidly becomes a way of life as your understanding deepens of the intricate relationship of your conscious and unconscious minds.

Personal growth is the path to bringing more Light into your life.  Embrace the journey.  Do the work.  Examine what you believe, both consciously and unconsciously, and grow.

BOOK LIGHTS: from “The Planetarization of Consciousness” by Dane Rudhyar

“Philosophy, in the most authentic sense of this word, is an enquiry into the basic character and the implications of human experience and, in the most general sense of the term, existence. [Italics the author’s]  The purpose of such an enquiry seems obvious.  It is to enable human beings to collectively and individually develop their innate potentialities with the best possible chance of success, of total happiness and/or self-transformation toward higher levels of fulfillment.”

by Dane Rudhyar

Thus begins Dane Rudhyar’s 1970/77 book.  How far, it seems, we have come since we honored the philosophers in our society.  For some of us, it becomes difficult to lift ourselves up above mundane human existence and we leave the philosophy part to the scholars.  But there are questions that we must ask ourselves and, as humans, this is a part of our existence on Planet Earth.  Perhaps the most essential questioning starts with ‘Why am I here? Who am I here to BE?’

Let’s promise ourselves that we will focus on those questions and look for the lessons that contain the answers.  We ARE here to develop our innate potentialities!

MUSE-INGS: Notice the Lessons

Lessons.  Lessons. Lessons.  Did you ever wish for ‘recess in the School of Life’?

Sometimes the lessons seem to be piled on top of each other, and at other times they seem to be so indistinct that they are almost impossible to discern.  It can feel exhausting to constantly be looking for the lessons.

BUT this is what makes Life so exciting, so fulfilling.  Everything that happens has a lesson somewhere inside it.  Are things going smoothly?  What’s the lesson in that?  Is there a bird in the yard?  What kind of bird is it and what is the lesson in that?  Are you late or is someone late for a meeting with you?  What is the lesson in that?

If we are constantly looking for the lesson, even in the little things in life, then we are not falling into the doldrums or panicking or getting angry.  We are simply curious about what the lessons are.

My mastermind buddy, Cass, and I were on the phone recently talking about new directions for our businesses when Cass watched 2 baby deer be born right in front of her!  How exciting to have the privilege to watch these new lives come into the world!  My observation was that the Universe was telling us that our new directions bring new life into our businesses – this scene was confirmation of all the energy of newness.  We both enjoyed the sign.

Where can you look for confirmation that you are on the right track?  What about indications that you might want to consider another avenue today?  What does the current moment have as a gift for you?

Start noticing.  That’s all it takes.  Noticing.  Notice the person in front of you at Starbucks.  Our friend in Malibu just noticed that it was Kevin Spacey!  Notice the person at the cash register in the store while you are shopping.  They might need a smile or a kind word.  Notice what the messages in Nature are for you.  Deer?  Rabbits? Bears? Dogs? Cats?  Don’t worry about what the books say – what are these animals saying to you today?  Pause and listen to the voice of Nature to get a message.

Where does it feel as if your Power is residing in your body today?  This is another way to learn the lessons of the moment.  Take a moment to feel fully present in your body.  What do you notice?  Can you find a spot that holds your personal power right now?  If not, then where are you hiding it?

These are the kinds of questions that can guide you through a day.  Are you in an uncomfortable situation?  Find your personal power in your body and put your hand over it.  If you can’t find it, then put your hand over your solar plexus.  Are you feeling confused about what to do next?  Look around you, take a walk in Nature.  What are the signs, the signals with messages for you?

Your lessons are why you are awake and aware in this present moment.  Notice.

BOOK LIGHTS: “Smart Women Know Their Why” by Sheri McConnell

“Understand this.  Reacting is not authentic.  When we are in a reactive moment, we are not operating from our authentic core and we literally shrink and cause those around us to shrink also.  Being authentic is not about you, it is about your time in this world and how you affect everything around you.”

Sheri McConnell

Conscious Living requires that we be authentic – to our Higher Self and to our Life Purpose.  I love what Sheri is saying – ‘Being authentic is not about you.’  It is time to discover and claim your Life Purpose and to manifest that in the World.  I’ll help you!  And we are all waiting for you to do this!  You are loved and supported as you make the choice to be your authentic self.

MUSE-INGS: What’s your ‘Why’?

I have never thought of the cave people as ‘artists’ but this message brings a new light to that word, doesn’t it?  Of course, I have seen cave paintings and petroglyphs but I hadn’t thought about the division of labor beginning back in the days of the cave dwellers.  I am intrigued by the idea that we each have talents and it helps society for us to determine what those talents are.  Self-examination as an aid to society as a whole.  Hmmmm…..

So where are your talents?  I can play the piano, a bit, but I’m not as good [by any measure!] as my friend, Cindy, who is a professional musician.  I can cook a decent meal but I’m not as good as my nephew, Jonathan, the chef.  Does comparing myself to others help anybody?  I don’t think so.

Each of us has a Life Purpose that defines the ‘why’ of our being here at this moment in the history of Planet Earth.  For some of the cave dwellers, they were the chroniclers of their people’s existence.  Maybe there was some elaborate communication going on and they were the ones who helped to educate the next group of people who came along.  What is your ‘why’?

Have you ever examined this question?  Have you asked yourself the ‘why’ and the ‘who’?  Or have you focused on the ‘what’ you came to Earth to DO?  I suspect that most of us have been answering this question since we were tiny tots – ‘What do you want to do when you grow up?’  Sometimes it’s couched as ‘What do you want to BE when you grow up?’ but isn’t that the same thing? A doctor.  A firefighter.  A vet.  A teacher.    But there’s a more important question to ask ourselves as adults – ‘WHO did I come here to BE?’

The way to answer that question is to look at some other questions.  ‘Why did I come to Earth at this time?’  is one of those questions.  ‘What are my talents and my dreams?’ is another one.  The important thing is to ASK questions of ourselves.  This is the most important aspect of living a Conscious Life.

When we slide through our days without questioning ourselves we do a disservice to all of society.  Think about the context of your Life.  You are alive on Planet Earth at the same moment as all of the others on Earth today have chosen to be here.  Each of you has a personal Life Purpose for your existence.  All of you have agreed to be here at the same time.  What if you chose not to search for your purpose?  What if you told all of the other people, billions of them, that you were not going to show up for your mission on Earth?  And how would you feel if someone told you that they were not going to fulfill their Life Purpose even though you are depending on them to do just that?

It’s interesting to ponder the web that humanity has woven by choosing to be contemporaries on Planet Earth.  Each person has a responsibility to be the someone that their Higher Self knows them to be.

The first step in living your Life Purpose is to discover what it is.  Do the self-examination that requires.  Ask for help if you need it.  There are many ways to uncover this but don’t let another week go by without doing some self-
examination.  Find out your personal ‘why.’  It could change your Life!

How often do we keep going down the same road, knowing exactly where it goes, and yet expecting to get somewhere else?  CREATE the new road for yourself.  Make the magic work for you.  Believe that you CAN and that you DESERVE the magic in your life.  Let’s all agree to create a new dream reality – where we support each other in our pursuits and we cheer each other’s victories.  Let’s focus on what we do want in our lives rather than on what we don’t want.

MUSE-INGS: Find Your Magic

Magic and Empowerment.  Interesting words to put together.

I love the word ‘magic’ because it conjures up [pun intended] all kinds of possibilities that are beyond the so-called normal realm.  As a little girl I lived in fairy tales with all sorts of magical things happening.  Of course, I also saw things that I now realize not everyone else was seeing.  Are all of our children seeing magic everywhere in their lives but having the magic shut down or blocked out of their vision?

Maybe life in the 21st Century has become so focused on reality that we forget to notice the magic in the reality around us.  We just watched the movie ‘Inception’ and the complexity of that dream world was fascinating.  Dream levels within levels within levels.  What’s real?  What is the dream?  Can the dream become real?  What great questions to ask ourselves!

If we, as a society, join in a collective dream, do we not manifest that as reality?  If we, collectively, agree that something is so, do we not project that belief into the world around us until reality is shaped by that belief?  Believing is Seeing.  In order to see something, we must first believe it to be visible.  Many scientific studies have shown that those who have been trained to see or not see something will manifest their belief in the world around them, even if ‘reality’ does not actually reflect that belief.  An ophthalmologist once told me that if an adult is given a pair of glasses that reverse what is seen to create an upside down image, that person’s brain will learn to reverse the image to make it upright within 3 days of wearing the glasses.  In a photography class, I learned that paper that appears white to our eyes is actually reflecting the light around it, such as green in fluorescent lighting or yellow in incandescent, but our brains translate the brightest paper into the white color we expect to see.  The camera doesn’t have this translator and takes a picture of green or yellow paper!

So how important is it that we check our belief systems periodically so that we can assess our reality?  Are we believing what we want to see?  Are we SEEING what we want to see or, if not, have we checked what we are believing about our reality?

As you go through your days this week, ask yourself what your reality is telling you about your belief system.  Look at yourself as the magician creating the illusions around you.  Then look at what you have created and ask if you feel empowered by that.  Let yourself move into your own power by practicing magic in little areas of your life, especially if you need to take baby steps.  Give yourself permission to play in your days.  Let yourself move into a feeling of personal empowerment by assessing your beliefs.  When I work with private clients, this is the first place we need to work, because sometimes our beliefs have been planted by others or were adopted by our younger selves and no longer have a place in our reality.  Sometimes we have let someone take away our magic.

My blessing to you this week is that you find your magic!  I trust that it is there for you to find!

BOOK LIGHTS: from “My Stroke of Insight: A Brain Scientist’s Personal Journey”

“One of the greatest lessons I learned was how to feel the physical component of emotion.  Joy was a feeling in my body.  Peace was a feeling in my body.  I thought it was interesting that I could feel when a new emotion was triggered.  I could feel new emotions flood through me and then release me.  I had to learn new words to label these ‘feeling’ experiences, and most remarkable, I learned that I had the power to choose whether to hook into a feeling and prolong its presence in my body, or just let it quickly flow right out of me.”

by Jill Bolte Taylor, Ph. D.

When Jill Bolte Taylor suffered a stroke she had to relearn living in consciousness, but her awareness shifted so profoundly that she couldn’t go back to being the way she had been before the stroke.  Noticing how much control we have, how much power over our thoughts and emotions, makes us truly empowered individuals.  CHOOSE what you think, feel, believe!

MUSE-INGS: Choose your focus – and laugh?

Focus on the beauty?  Not so easy to do when things are looking bleak or when our attention takes us down a rabbit-hole into the space where everything is ugly.

But have you ever noticed how, when you DO focus on something besides ugliness, you can actually feel uplifted?  Have you ever been really down and had a little child come up and give you a hug?  There is true beauty in that hug, even if it’s full of mud or comes with a bouquet of weeds.  Or have you been feeling sorry for yourself, feeling lonely, and had a friend call out of the blue and invite you out?

We really can control our thoughts when we become aware of our power over them.  We all have knee-jerk reactions to situations or problems or even joy.  Becoming Aware [with a capital ‘A’] means learning to assess those knee-jerk reactions and making a conscious decision about how to act next.  A thought does not have to hold us in its grip without letting go if we choose not to allow it.

Sometimes thoughts do come unbidden into our consciousness but the important thing to learn is to process the thought and ask:

What is this?
Is this true for me now?
Is it in my highest good to hold onto this thought at this time?

Unbidden thoughts often stem from our insecurities and they masquerade as the reality of the moment but we must ask ourselves if they are actually true in that moment.  We can worry all we want about the next tornado or earthquake or hurricane but if the sun is shining now isn’t that what is real?  Isn’t that where we can find the beauty?  We can always worry about something that might happen but if it is not true in this moment then there is something else to look at, to think about, something else on which to focus our attention.

Look around you today and see if you are focusing on the thoughts that are uplifting or if you are attaching to those thoughts that bring you down, that distract you from the beauty of the day.  Even if you are wrestling with a problem today, can you find something of beauty to think of for a moment?  Scientists are now saying that smiling can make us feel happy – it’s not just the other way around!  Try looking in the mirror when you are focusing on problems and force yourself to smile.  I guarantee that you will either laugh at the way you look when you are worrying and/or laugh at the way you look when you force a smile.  That single laugh will shift your body’s energy and allow the Light to come through in that moment.

That is an important shift, for allowing the Light to shine also brings with it resources that better equip you to find a solution to your problem.  You are more resourceful with the Light in you than when you shroud yourself in darkness.

So go ahead and let your thoughts drift across the sky of your mind while you choose which ones on which to focus your attention.  And if you need help, remember to look in the mirror and laugh a beautiful laugh!
